Love anime? Love cats? These top anime for cat-lovers will satisfy your need for cute cats.
It’s no secret that Japan loves cats. It might be why so many anime shows feature cats, whether as the stars or in smaller supporting roles. So which are the best anime for cat-lovers? Here are the best cat-centric anime shows (and some shows you should avoid).
Chi’s Sweet Home
Chi is a kitten who was separated from her mother and adopted by a little boy. The boy and his family live in an apartment complex that doesn’t allow animals, so they have to hide Chi from the landlady. This anime for cat-lovers follow’s Chi’s adjustment to her new home and the challenges her family faces in trying to keep her.
Each episode is only a few minutes long, but there are 104 episodes in total. You can also buy the complete manga collection here from Amazon.
Fruit’s Basket (aka Furuba)
This is my all-time favorite anime/manga series. Fruit’s Basket is about a girl (Tohru) who meets the Sohmas, a family cursed by the spirits of the Chinese zodiac. In this zodiac, however, there is a 13th member: the cat. Tohru just happens to ADORE the cat, and if she wants to help the Sohmas, she must find a way to break the curse, or else the cat (Kyo) will be locked away in an isolated room for the rest of his life.
There was a recent remake of Fruits Basket (the original anime came out in 2001) in 2019. You can watch a couple of episodes on Funimation’s website. Amazon sells the complete Fruits Basket manga collection, and it’s well worth the read.
Azumanga Daioh
Although cats don’t play a starring role in this anime for cat-lovers, one of the characters is a die-hard cat fan. Azumanga Daioh follows the insane and unpredictable adventures of a group of high school girls. The show makes little sense, but that’s part of what’s so charming about it.
The tall and athletic Sakaki, known for being cool and quiet, has a secret: she LOVES cats. Unfortunately, every time she gets close to a cat, it bites her! Her nemesis, a gray striped cat, makes an appearance frequently. Azumanga Daioh has 26 episodes; you can buy the complete anime collection on Amazon.
My Roommate Is A Cat
A lonely writer finds himself adopting a stray cat, and he’s not sure what to make of his situation. The cat doesn’t either! They slowly learn to trust each other and form a bond over the course of 12 episodes.
I must warn you, however… the very first episode is difficult to watch. It involves the cat finding one of her siblings dead of starvation. The moment is very brief, but if you are sensitive like I am, it’s difficult to watch. If you’re brave enough, you can watch the entire series on Crunchyroll.
She And Her Cat
Ah, the life of a college student. It seems more bearable when you have a fluffy black cat. She and Her Cat is based on the original short film of the same name. The 2016 anime adaptation, subtitled “Everything Flows”, is an updated version about a college student’s life with her black cat.
Only four short episodes were made, but they’re 100% adorable — and they’re from the cat’s perspective. Watch each one on Crunchyroll and fall in love with these two wonderful characters.
