This dapper gentleman cat has a signature look that’s driving all the girls wild.
Well, my, my, my! What a handsome man! This young sir is Otto von Katze, and he lives happily with his lovely fur mama Pauline.
We were very excited to feature this gentlecat on our blog! Let’s get to know him.
Hello, Pauline! We love seeing your daily updates on Instagram. What can you tell us about Otto?
Otto is a sweet orange-white kitty. He’s about 1 year and 5 months old. You can recognize him for his cool bow ties and a lovely fur heart-shaped mark on his back.
He seems like a sweetheart. Is he a people person – er, cat?
He’s a very shy kitty. He always hides under the sofa when someone knocks at the door, so every time we get a package, we can tell because Otto is already hidden! It takes time for him to get along with someone who is not Mom or Dad, and this is sad because he was more sociable and curious for any visitor when he was a kitten.
Don’t worry, Otto – it’s okay to be shy! Misha is the same way. What favorite toys and treats does he have?
He loves strings, especially one that came out of my pajamas. As soon as he saw it I knew I had to give it up to him. He’s very talkative; he likes to meow big time to me when I’m about to serve his food, give him a treat or start playing. His meowing gets very wild when I take [out] the bag of dried chicken treats he adores! It’s like a sweet and desperate but adorable meow. 🙂
When did you adopt Otto? What was it about him that won your heart?
Otto was adopted in July 2015 in Bogotá, Colombia. He was born in May 2015 and was found in the street with his calico cat mom and three siblings – two black kitty sisters and one orange tabby brother. They were all rescued and taken to a vet office where they were put in adoption, and one night, we found this little, skinny and almost fur-less kitty. We had no doubt we wanted to take him home with us.
Otto had a fungal infection that was causing the loss of fur, so we treated him topically for about a month and a half. He was getting better, but as soon as the treatment was over, he relapsed. He had to start taking pills along with the topical treatment, and he recovered in less than a month. Sadly, we found out that he carries the Coronavirus, which can lead to FIP. It’s not active on him, but there is a chance to develop it later. We really hope it does not. For that reason, we take very good care of him.
We’re sorry to hear about Otto’s troubles. 🙁 It’s very lucky he found a loving home. Kitties with FIP (or chances of it) deserve love too! How is he doing right now?
Otto is getting bigger and looks healthier every day. [He’s] full of energy and showing some kind of love towards us! He loves to lick our hands and arms and then bite them for a while; he also likes cleaning and chewing our hair every time he can. He’s not allowed to our bedroom at night because he tries to play with us real hard, so when we wake up in the morning and open the door for him, he meows and shows us some love with head bonks and tail hugs.
You said you were from Colombia. Why name him Otto? It’s not very, uh… Colombian?
We decided to name him Otto because [it] is a German name related to royalty and fortune. He’s our king! Before we decided to adopt him, my husband and I went to Germany and fell in love with their culture; that’s why his name is Otto von Katze, von Katze meaning something like “of cat”. It does not [make] too much sense, but we loved how powerful it sounded! This is funny because he has been asked if he is German on his IG account.
We also hear that Otto has a secret identity. What was his name?
He has an alter ego called Ottozilla. Otto transforms into the wild Ottozilla when he is alert about something. He totally puffs up on his back and tail and runs like desperate all over the place. He jumps everywhere and sometimes walks sideways to show who is the boss!
You moved to the US fairly recently. Is that correct?
In November of 2015 we moved from Bogotá to California He was a very brave boy during the flight, and because he has such a beautiful face, several people took him for a girl! He was well-behaved in-flight and at the stop layovers, and as soon as he knew we arrived at our new home, he started to check his new kingdom right away!
Misha and Tippy would be total scaredy-cats on a plane! Is he adjusting well in his new home?
He’s very happy here. [He] loves to stare at the birds from the window and yell at them. Sometimes, we take him out for a walk inside of a spaceship-like backpack. It has a plastic big window from where he can look outside.
We’ve noticed that Otto is a very fashionable cat.
He has a collection of bow ties which are his trademark on IG. He’s wearing them every day, and it’s very surprising that he tolerates them, since it’s impossible to put anything on his head (we tried really hard to put him [in] a Santa hat last Christmas). We’re gonna try to put him into a costume for this Halloween, and we hope it will be a big surprise for his IG “furriends”…if he allows it!
We can’t wait to see it! Well, from all of us here at The Meow Place, it’s been a real pleasure. We’ll be looking forward to more pictures!

I know Otto the dapper cat. He’s a very good furriend of mine on Instagram and he asked me to pop over here and take a look at Amber’s blog and read the feature that Amber was doing on him.
Great job Amber. Now i know much more about Otto.
Thanks guys.
You’re welcome, Lucky! We had great fun interviewing Otto. 🙂
