Keeping your raw feeding resolution just became simpler with Primal’s Freeze-Dried Beef Liver Munchies for cats and dogs.
Have you made a raw resolution? Do you love feeding your cat a raw diet, but you get hung up on treats with artificial junk in them? Our Chewy Influencer March review is what you need to read to find out all about Primal’s delicious freeze-dried raw treats.
What Is Primal?
Primal, also known as Primal Pet Foods, is a brand that specializes in raw food for cats and dogs. We’ve been feeding Misha and Tippy Primal for some time now. Although their diet also consists of dry and canned food as well, I attribute their good health mostly to the freeze-dried pork nuggets from Primal’s pantry.
Primal Freeze-Dried Beef Liver Munchies are the subject of our review today, so let me tell you a little more about them.
Freeze-Dried Raw Food? As A Treat?
Yep! Freeze-dried raw food is an easy (and less messy) way to feed your cat a raw food diet. You simply rehydrate the nuggets with some water or Primal’s Raw Goat Milk and serve it in a stainless steel dish.
Primal Freeze-Dried Beef Liver Munchies, on the other hand, don’t need to be rehydrated. They contain only a single ingredient: beef liver! You won’t find any false advertising here; it says they’re beef liver, and beef liver is all that goes into them.
Why Does It Say It’s For Both Cats And Dogs?
Since there’s only one ingredient, and it doesn’t disturb either species’ stomachs (unless they have an allergy to beef), it’s safe for both. Keep in mind that these beef liver munchies are only meant as treats. They don’t contain the essential vitamins and nutrients for either cats or dogs to live on.
Misha & Tippy Taste Test Primal’s Beef Liver Munchies
I’ve spoiled Misha and Tippy with Vital Essentials’ Freeze-Dried Rabbit Bites, and the thought of getting them hooked on another expensive treat (they’re $6.99 for a 2 oz bag from Chewy) was icky. However, my cats’ health is my #1 priority. Primal’s food quality is outstanding, and I couldn’t resist giving these a try.
Misha: The Picky Eater
Due to Misha’s overwhelmingly picky nature, I was sure that she would turn up her nose at beef liver. Well, I was wrong.
I had to break the treat (which is shaped like a cube) down into bite-size pieces for her and put them in a stainless steel bowl. She quickly gobbled them up! She was even sniffing the bag like I’d dipped it in catnip.
Tippy: The Prima Donna
Let’s just say that the beef liver munchies didn’t go over so well with Tippy. She did a test bite, wrinkled her nose, and walked away. Go figure.
She had absolutely no interest in eating the treats after that, so I really didn’t get the chance to get her opinion on the taste.
What We Liked About Primal’s Freeze-Dried Beef Liver Munchies
I loved the fact that beef liver was literally the only ingredient. 100% organ meat? Count me in! Primal doesn’t give bad or questionable ingredients a chance to sneak their way in, and even their freeze-dried meals are totally free from icky stuff.
Even though Tippy didn’t care for them, I’m used to her turning her nose up at food she once liked. If she’s tried it, she hates having it a second time. Misha loved the treats; that’s all that counts.
I thought it was neat that the treat was good for both cats and dogs, making it ideal for multiple pet households. You don’t have to worry about the dog stealing the cat’s treat and getting sick off of it, or vice versa.
What We Didn’t Like – And Why!
Despite the purity of the ingredients list and the high quality protein source, I have a bone to pick with these treats.
I had to break the treats up for Misha to be able to eat them, and it wasn’t easy to do. I had to saw the treat in half with a butter knife; the second time I used a steak knife to make it easier. If these treats are really meant to be for cats and dogs, shouldn’t they be a size that suits both?
These things aren’t small enough for cats. Unless you have a very large breed, your cat will have a tough time getting their tiny jaws around one.
The Final Verdict
This is an interesting one because I have two ratings to give: one for cats, and one for dogs!
For Cats
The price is actually quite reasonable for raw food, but I’m still hung up on how large the treats are. To be fair, they should really make two different size treats (one for each species) like Vital Essentials does with their Rabbit Bites.
I give Primal’s Freeze-Dried Beef Liver Munchies four out of five meows for cats.
For Dogs
You could argue that larger breeds won’t find a 2 oz bag filling enough for even a day, but they’re treats. They aren’t meant to be a meal. I see absolutely no problem with these treats from a dog’s POV. Five out of five meows!
Yes, I still use meow ratings for dogs. Deal with it.
We didn’t try these this month because our Mom wasn’t sure if we would eat them. Maybe we need to think out of the box and be adventurous!
Primal is pretty hard to resist. 😉 I’m sure you guys would love them!
