Just wait until you read the story behind this darling’s weird moniker… it’s quite the “tail”!
Think back to the most unusual nickname you were ever given. Go ahead. We’ll wait.
We sincerely doubt that you can top Serena the cat’s nickname, however: Pubes.
Needless to say, we were hesitant to make this feature for fear of offending delicate sensibilities, but after hearing the explanation for the nickname and learning about Serena, we just had to do it!
We turned to Serena’s pet parent, Scott, to find out how Serena’s now well-known moniker came about.
We understand that you adopted Serena (aka Pubes) from a local shelter. What was it about her that made you choose her?
“As much as Mommy-roommate and I would like to believe that she was hatched from an egg, we actually adopted ‘Pubes’ from the Orange County Animal Shelter on May 19, 2009. She was five years old at the time, making her twelve and a half at present. When we first saw her in her cage (Kennel #C0332, to be exact) the name tag said that her name was Serena and she came into the shelter a month earlier as a stray.”
“She was one of the few cats who was not meowing or vying for our attention. #A0951414 (her prison number) immediately won our hearts as she looked up from her sleeping mat and managed to mutter a surly sounding ‘Meh’. An instant bond was formed that has lasted to this very day.”
Serena is a beautiful name for a beautiful cat. So, if we may ask… how in the world did the name “Pubes” come into the picture? Aside from the ease of less syllables, that is…
“Serena had a bit of a name change one year later when Mommy-roommate was upset at the amount of fine, white cat hair consistently covering our black stove top. Exasperated one afternoon, she exclaimed, ‘I’ve had it with all of your gossamer pubes floating around this place!’ And a new name was born. Of course, to the vet and other officials, we still write her name as Serena.”
It’s a name for which she’s become quite well-known. What is Pubes like? Is she as mellow at home as she was at the shelter?
“Pubes loves to eat and sleep. She’ll rarely partake in the catnip banana toy, choosing instead to lay in one of three places around our home: the bedroom window cat perch, our bed, or the hammock part of the cat tower in our living room. It’s rare that she will pose in other locations as she’s too busy resting.”
“Pubes may seem grumpy and lazy, but to this day, she is the same lovable snuggler that we met all those years ago at the pound. Sometimes she’ll leave a gift just outside of the litter box, but we love her just as she loves us—unconditionally.”
